Privacy policy — Inkfold

1. In short

Inkfold has no accounts, no logins and no user profiles. It does not read, copy, store or transmit the content of the pages you visit. Your settings live in your own browser. The only thing Inkfold ever sends over the network is an anonymous heartbeat to inkfold-ext.com when it is installed and when it is removed, so that we can count installs. There is no advertising, no tracking pixel and no third-party analytics inside your pages.

The one-sentence version

Theming is local to your tab; the only network call is an anonymous install and uninstall count to our own domain.

2. What happens inside a page

When you open a site, Inkfold's content script looks at the page's own presentation — background colours, text colours, borders, shadows, the computed styles the site's stylesheet already produced — and writes a corrected set of colours over it. That work happens entirely in the tab, in memory, on your computer.

Inkfold examines appearance: colour values, contrast relationships, and whether an element is an image, a video or a canvas so it can be left alone.
Inkfold does not examine meaning: it has no interest in the words, form fields, passwords, messages, or documents on the page, and no code path that collects them.
Nothing about the page — not its address, not its title, not a screenshot, not a fragment of text — is written to a server.

3. What is stored, and where

Your preferences are kept using Chrome's extension storage on your own machine. That is the whole database. It contains:

Whether Inkfold is switched on.
Your chosen mode: Smart Dark, Auto or Smart Light.
Your brightness, contrast and sepia values, including any values you have set for particular domains.
The list of domains you have paused, stored as bare hostnames such as example.com.
Whether the schedule is enabled, and the two times you set.

These records never leave your browser through Inkfold. If you have Chrome sync switched on, Chrome itself may sync extension storage between your own signed-in devices; that is a Google feature governed by Google's terms, and we receive nothing from it. Uninstalling Inkfold removes this storage.

4. The install heartbeat

Inkfold sends one small request to inkfold-ext.com when it is first installed, and one when it is uninstalled. Its only purpose is to count how many browsers are using the extension, which is the same figure the Chrome Web Store reports to us, kept in a form we can read ourselves.

What it contains: the extension version, the event (install or uninstall), and a randomly generated value that lets us avoid double-counting a single browser. That value is generated on your machine and is not derived from you, your hardware, your email address or your browsing.
What it does not contain: your name, your email address, any account identifier, any advertising identifier, any page address, any page content, and no precise location. As with any web request, our server sees the connecting IP address and standard request headers; we do not use them to build a profile and we do not retain them alongside the heartbeat for longer than our ordinary server logs, which are kept for up to thirty days.
Where it goes: to inkfold-ext.com and nowhere else. Inkfold requests network access to that one host and no other.

5. What we never collect

Browsing history, in whole or in part.
Page text, form input, keystrokes, clipboard contents, cookies or credentials.
Screenshots or recordings of any kind.
Contact details — there is no field in which to give us any.
Anything sold, rented or shared with data brokers, advertisers or partners. We have none, and this is not a business model we intend to acquire.

6. Permissions, one by one

Chrome asks you to approve a list of permissions. Here is what each one is actually for.

Access to the sites you visit — folding a page is a page-level operation, so Inkfold's stylesheet work has to run in the tab you are reading. This access is used only to apply and remove theming, locally.
Storage — to keep the settings listed in section 3 on your machine.
Alarms — to wake the extension at the two times in your schedule, so a fold can happen at dusk without the browser polling a clock all day.
Active tab — so the popup can show the domain you are currently on and apply a per-domain setting to the right site.
Windows — so a change you make in one window is reflected in the others you have open.
Access to inkfold-ext.com — for the heartbeat in section 4, and nothing else.

7. Your choices

You are in control of everything Inkfold holds, because all of it is on your computer.

Pause a site: open the popup and switch that domain off. Inkfold stands down on it immediately.
Pause everything: the main switch at the top of the popup, or AltShiftT.
Erase your settings: remove Inkfold from chrome://extensions. Chrome deletes its storage as part of the removal.
Ask us anything: write to privacy@inkfold-ext.com. Because we hold no personal data about you, there is generally nothing for us to export or delete on request — but if you believe otherwise, tell us and we will look.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA to access, correct, delete or restrict the processing of personal data about you. We have designed Inkfold so that those requests have almost nothing to act upon; the heartbeat in section 4 is the only processing we carry out, and it is anonymous.

8. Children

Inkfold is a reading tool suitable for general audiences, but it is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age. If you believe a child has somehow provided us with personal information, write to us and we will remove it.

9. Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what Inkfold collects or sends, we will publish the new version at inkfold-ext.com/policy, change the effective date at the top of this page, and note the change in the extension's release notes. We will not quietly begin collecting something new under an old date.
