Inkfold the reading room Back to the front page

Welcome

Inkfold is installed. Here is where everything lives.

Nothing to set up, no account to make. Three minutes with this page and you will know every control the extension has — there aren't many, which is rather the point.

First run Reading time: 3 minutes Chrome 106 and later

Three small movements

Start with a long article

Inkfold shows its manners best on something you actually intend to read to the end.

01

Pin the mark

Click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin Inkfold. The folded leaf turns warm when the extension is on and goes grey when it stands down, so you can always tell at a glance.

02

Choose a fold

Open the popup and pick Smart Dark for carbon, Smart Light for warm paper, or Auto to let your system preference and your schedule decide. The page settles immediately.

03

Set the dials

Under Adjustments, nudge brightness, contrast and sepia until the column sits comfortably. Those three numbers are filed against this domain and restored on your next visit.

Two keys, if you prefer not to click

Inkfold ships with a pair of shortcuts. Both are editable at chrome://extensions/shortcuts if they collide with something you already use.

  • AltShiftT — fold or unfold everything, everywhere.
  • AltShiftS — fold or unfold the site in front of you.

When a site would rather be left alone

Some pages are already well made, and a few carry meaning in their colour: a chart's key, a photographer's portfolio, a colour picker, a design tool. Open the popup and switch that domain off. Inkfold stands down on it and remembers, so you never have to make the same decision twice.

The reverse holds too. A site you have paused can be switched back on from the same button, and your dials for it are still where you left them.

A note on odd pages

Chrome protects its own pages — chrome:// screens, the Web Store, the new-tab page — and no extension may restyle them. If the site button in the popup is greyed out, that is why, and nothing is wrong.

The reading lamp, on a clock

In the Schedule card, switch the toggle on and give Inkfold two times: the hour you want the web to go quiet, and the hour you want the paper back. Nine in the evening until seven in the morning is a sensible first attempt. It crosses midnight without complaint and uses the clock already on your machine — nothing is fetched to make it work.

What Inkfold will never do

It will not ask you to sign in, send you email, show you an advertisement, or upload a word of what you read. The folding happens inside the tab; the only thing that ever crosses the network is an anonymous install count to our own domain. The whole arrangement is written out in the privacy policy, and the short legal side in the terms.

If a page folds badly

It happens — the web is an untidy place. Send the address to hello@inkfold-ext.com with a line about what looked wrong, and we will have a proper look. Reports of the form "the body text goes grey on grey at this URL" are worth a great deal to us.
